AI Brand Mentions: How Tracking Works, How Reliable It Is and How to Do It for Free
AI brand mentions are the times an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Google's AI features names your business in an answer. Tracking tools measure them by running a fixed set of customer questions repeatedly and counting how often your brand appears, because a single answer tells you almost nothing. A study reported by Search Engine Land and Search Engine Journal found that when the same question was asked repeatedly, the list of brands almost never repeated, while how often a brand appeared across many runs was far steadier. So the useful number is a rate over many runs, not a position. This guide explains how tracking works, how reliable it is, and how to run a free version yourself.
We make Rocketito, a tool that writes and publishes SEO articles. We are not a tracking vendor, and nothing here depends on buying anything from us.
What Counts as an AI Brand Mention
Three different things are often mixed up. A mention means the assistant names your brand in the text. A citation or link means the answer shows your website as a source. A visit means a person clicked through. They move independently: you can be mentioned without being linked, and linked without being mentioned. Decide which one you want to improve before you choose a method.
How AI Brand Mention Tracking Works
Most tools follow the same steps. 1. Choose prompts: a list of questions your customers would ask, such as the service plus your city. 2. Run them: each prompt is sent to one or more assistants, often several times and on a schedule. 3. Read the answers: the tool looks for your brand and your competitors' names, and for linked sources. 4. Calculate metrics: typically a mention rate (the share of runs that name you), a link or citation rate, and a share of voice against named competitors. 5. Show a trend: the change over weeks. Vendors price by the number of prompts or credits, which is why a larger set costs more; Keyword.com, for example, charges 0.25 credits for one run on chat engines. For prices of the tools, see our comparison of AI visibility software pricing.
How Reliable Is It? What a 2,961-Run Study Found
The most useful independent evidence we found is a study by SparkToro's Rand Fishkin and Gumshoe.ai's Patrick O'Donnell, reported by Search Engine Land and Search Engine Journal. According to those reports, 600 volunteers ran 12 prompts through ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI features (AI Overviews and AI Mode) a combined 2,961 times in November and December 2025, with each prompt run 60 to 100 times per platform. Fishkin's summary was that there is less than a 1 in 100 chance that ChatGPT or Google's AI, asked 100 times, gives the same list of brands in any two responses. The lists varied in the brands, their order and their number. Visibility percentages across many runs were steadier than ranking positions.
Two cautions apply. The study has not been peer reviewed, and the authors say they are not data scientists. One of them is a co-founder of Gumshoe.ai, which sells AI tracking, so weigh the conclusion accordingly. It is still the best published sample we found, and it matches how tracking tools are built: they repeat prompts and report rates.
What This Means for You
- Do not trust one answer. If you ask once and see your brand, or do not, you have learned very little.
- Do not trust positions. A report that says you are "third" in an AI answer is describing one run.
- Do trust rates over many runs. A mention rate across dozens of runs is the figure the evidence supports.
- Be wary of a single "AI score". A score is only useful if the vendor shows the prompts it ran, how many times, on which assistants and on what date.
- Remember the scale. The study ran each prompt 60 to 100 times. A manual log cannot match that, so treat your result as a hint.
A Free Monthly Method
Write 20 prompts a customer would really ask, including your service, city and a few phrasings of the same question. Once a month, run each prompt three times in a fresh, logged-out session of each assistant you care about. Record, for every run, whether your brand is mentioned, whether your website is linked, and which competitors appear. Then calculate your mention rate as the number of runs that named you divided by the total runs. Keep the same wording each month so the numbers can be compared.
| Prompt | Assistant | Run | Mentioned (yes or no) | Linked (yes or no) | Competitors named |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best accountant in your city for small businesses | ChatGPT | 1 | |||
| Best accountant in your city for small businesses | ChatGPT | 2 | |||
| Best accountant in your city for small businesses | ChatGPT | 3 |
Add two free sources of real data. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links in its search results, so filter your analytics by that source to see actual visits. Google says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is counted in the Web report in Search Console, with no separate filter, so watch pages whose impressions hold while clicks fall.
What Moves Brand Mentions
Nobody can promise that an assistant will name you. What the search companies say points to basics: pages must be crawlable and, for Google's AI features, indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet, with no special markup or AI-specific file needed. OpenAI says sites that opt out of its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Beyond access, assistants tend to name businesses that are described clearly and consistently on their own site and elsewhere, such as a complete Google Business Profile, reviews and directories. Treat that as sensible practice, not a guarantee.

Questions to Ask Any AI Mention Tracking Tool
How many prompts are included, and how many times is each run? On which assistants, and are they the real consumer products or an API? From which country? How often? Can I export the raw answers? Is the metric a rate over many runs or a single score? A vendor that cannot answer these in writing is hard to trust.
How We Checked This
The study findings come from reports of the SparkToro and Gumshoe.ai research in Search Engine Land and Search Engine Journal; we did not see the raw data. Statements about OpenAI come from its bot documentation and publisher FAQ, and those about Google from Search Central's documentation on AI features and your website. The Keyword.com credit figure comes from its pricing page, read on 2026-10-20. Frequently Asked Questions
What are AI brand mentions?
The times an AI assistant names your business in an answer. They are different from citations, which show your site as a source, and from visits, which are clicks.
How do you track brand mentions in ChatGPT?
Run a fixed set of customer questions several times and count how often your brand is named. Paid tools automate this; you can also keep a monthly log and watch referral traffic tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com.
How accurate is AI brand mention tracking?
Single answers vary a lot. A reported study of 2,961 runs found the list of brands almost never repeated, while rates across many runs were steadier, so only rates are meaningful.
Can I track AI mentions for free?
Yes, with a monthly prompt log, your analytics and Search Console. It is slower than a paid tool and uses far fewer runs.
How do I get mentioned by AI assistants?
Make sure the crawlers are allowed and your pages are indexed, describe your business clearly and consistently, and keep your Google Business Profile and reviews in order. Nothing is guaranteed.
